“By who?”
He didn't answer.
Margaret did.
“Whitmore Capital Services.”
Jessica closed her eyes.
“Oh my God.”
Richard turned on Margaret.
“Are you enjoying this?”
Margaret looked at him for a long moment.
“No.”
That seemed to surprise him.
“I would've enjoyed being wrong.”
For the first time all morning, the anger left Richard's face.
Something else appeared.
Not remorse.
Not yet.
Fear.
Margaret looked toward the ocean.
“I gave you access because I trusted you. I put your name next to mine because I thought being married meant building a life, not keeping score.”
Richard swallowed.
“Margaret—”
“No.”
Her voice didn't rise.
It didn't need to.
“You don't get to use my first name like we're suddenly intimate because the cards stopped working.”
Jessica took another step away from him.
Richard looked around the pool deck as if someone might rescue him from reality.
“No judge is going to let you do this.”
“My attorney agrees.”
Richard blinked.
Margaret nodded toward the paper.
“That's why everything was done through the proper legal process.”
He picked up the notice again.
His hands were trembling now.
Jessica saw it.
So did Margaret.
A phone began ringing.
Richard's.
He pulled it from his pocket.
The screen displayed a name.
He rejected the call.
It rang again immediately.
Then Margaret's phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
She read it.
“Your office.”
Richard stared at her.
“What?”
“They've received the audit notice.”
His face turned pale.
“Margaret, call them.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what this will do.”
“I understand exactly what it will do.”
“My partners will panic.”
“They should.”
“You're destroying my company!”
Margaret looked at him.
“You transferred $1.6 million from an account governed by restrictions you signed.”
Jessica gasped.
Richard turned toward her.
“It wasn't like that.”
Margaret's voice sharpened for the first time.
“Then explain it.”
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Explain the St. Barts transfers.”
Silence.
“The jewelry.”
Silence.
“The apartment on Brickell.”
Jessica's eyes widened.
“What apartment?”
Richard's expression collapsed.
Margaret studied him.
Apparently Jessica didn't know about that either.
Interesting.
“You have another apartment?”
Jessica asked.
“Jessica, stop.”
“With who?”
“No one.”
Margaret folded her arms.
“I don't believe the lease lists a tenant.”
Jessica stared at him.
Then she laughed.
It was short and humorless.
“You lied to both of us.”
Richard stepped toward her.
“Listen to me.”
“Don't touch me.”
He stopped.
Jessica reached into the beach tote she had brought with her and pulled out a phone.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling a car.”
“You came with me.”
“And now I'm leaving without you.”
“Jessica.”
She looked at him with disgust.
“You told me your wife was using you for money.”
Margaret almost admired the absurdity.
Jessica continued.
“You told me you stayed married because she threatened to ruin you.”
Richard said nothing.
Jessica's mouth twisted.
“She didn't threaten you, did she?”
Margaret answered quietly.
“No.”
Jessica looked at Margaret.
“You could've ruined him any time.”
“I didn't want to.”
That answer affected Jessica more than Margaret expected.
The younger woman looked back at Richard.
“So she wasn't trapping you.”
Richard's face had gone completely still.
“You were using her.”
“That's enough.”
“No,” Jessica said. “I think I've finally heard enough.”
She removed the bracelet from her wrist.
Richard stared.
“Keep it.”
Jessica placed it on the table.
“I don't want stolen jewelry.”
“It wasn't stolen.”
Margaret glanced at the bracelet.
“Technically, that part is still being determined.”
Jessica almost smiled.
Then a black SUV pulled into the circular drive visible beyond the glass railing.
Jessica grabbed her bag.
Richard blocked her path.
“You're seriously walking away over money?”
She stopped.
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Richard had accidentally asked the correct question.
Jessica looked him directly in the eyes.
“No.”
She pointed toward Margaret.
“I'm walking away because you spent a year telling me she was some pathetic woman living off you.”
Her voice dropped.
“And you brought me into her house to humiliate her.”
Richard's face tightened.
Jessica shook her head.
“You didn't just lie about your money.”
She walked around him.
“You lied about the kind of man you are.”
The words landed hard.
Jessica left.
Richard watched her cross the terrace, disappear through the open glass doors, and head toward the driveway.
Then the pool deck fell quiet again.
Just Richard.
Margaret.
And the water.
He slowly sat down on the lounge chair opposite her.
For the first time that day, he looked his age.
“Is this what you wanted?”
Margaret looked at him.
“What?”
“To humiliate me.”
“No.”
“You could've talked to me privately.”
“I tried.”
Richard frowned.
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
He stared blankly.
“The night I asked whether anything was wrong.”
He looked away.
“You said you were tired.”
Another memory.
“Two weeks later, I asked whether there was something you needed to tell me.”
Richard said nothing.
“You accused me of being paranoid.”
Margaret's expression remained calm, but her eyes had changed.
“And last month, when I asked whether you still wanted this marriage, you kissed my forehead and told me I was imagining problems because I was getting older.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Margaret's voice softened.
“That was when I stopped asking.”
The Atlantic breeze moved across the pool.
Richard looked at the bank notice.
“What happens now?”
It was strange how quickly arrogance could disappear when money did.
Margaret sat back down.
“You'll receive divorce papers Monday morning.”
His eyes opened.
“Margaret—”
“The guesthouse has been prepared for you until then.”
“This is my home too.”
“No.”
She looked toward the mansion.
“It was our home.”
The distinction was devastating.
Richard rubbed his hands together.
“I can fix this.”
Margaret said nothing.
“I'll pay the money back.”
“With what?”
He looked at her sharply.
She wasn't mocking him.
That made it worse.
Richard stared at the ground.
“I made mistakes.”
“You made choices.”
“I got carried away.”
“For eleven months?”
His face tightened.
“I felt invisible.”
Margaret studied him.
There it was.
The explanation he had probably rehearsed.
“I felt like everything belonged to you,” he continued. “Every room. Every business dinner. Every person we knew. I was Margaret Whitmore's husband.”
“So you decided to become somebody by betraying me?”
“I wanted something that was mine.”
Margaret nodded toward the gates where Jessica's SUV was disappearing.
“How did that work out?”
Richard flinched.
Margaret immediately regretted the cruelty.
Not because he didn't deserve anger.
But because she refused to become him.
She stood and picked up her tote.
Richard stared at her.
“Where are you going?”
“Lunch.”
His expression shifted, almost childlike.
“That's it?”
Margaret stopped.
“What's supposed to happen?”
“I don't know.”
He looked toward the house.
“You just walk away?”
Margaret considered the question.
Fourteen years.
Birthday dinners.
Christmas mornings.
Hospital rooms.
Inside jokes.
Arguments.
Trips.
The night Richard held her after her mother died.
The morning he surprised her with coffee on the dock because she had been working too hard.
People wanted betrayal to erase love because hatred was simpler.
It didn't.
That was the tragedy.
Margaret had loved him.
Part of her probably always would.
But love wasn't the same thing as permission.
She walked back toward him.
Richard looked up.
For one dangerous second, hope entered his face.
Margaret removed her wedding ring.
She placed it beside the bracelet Jessica had left behind.
Richard stared at the two pieces of jewelry glittering beneath the Miami sun.

Both abandoned within minutes.
Margaret looked at him.
“I spent fourteen years making sure you never had to feel small.”
His eyes lowered.
“You did the rest yourself.”
Then she turned toward the house.
Richard called after her.
“Margaret.”
She stopped but didn't turn around.
“What am I supposed to do now?”
Margaret looked across the mansion, past the floor-to-ceiling windows, toward the life he had mistaken for his own.
Then she finally looked back at him.
“Build something.”
Richard stared.
“With what?”
Margaret's expression was unreadable.
“With whatever you told Jessica you used the first time.”
And she walked away.
Behind her, Richard remained alone beside the infinity pool.
His phone began ringing again.
Then another notification sounded.
Then another.
Bank.
Attorney.
Business partner.
Accountant.
The world he had borrowed was calling itself back.
Margaret crossed the marble living room without looking behind her.
For the first time in months, the enormous house didn't feel cold.
At the entrance, her longtime housekeeper, Elena, stood beside the open door.
She had worked for Margaret's family for nineteen years.
Elena glanced toward the pool.
“Is he leaving?”
Margaret paused.
“Eventually.”
Elena studied her face.
“You all right?”
Margaret almost gave the automatic answer.
Fine.
Instead she breathed deeply.
“No.”
Elena nodded.
No false encouragement.
No pity.
Just understanding.
Margaret smiled faintly.
“But I will be.”
She stepped outside.
A car waited at the front drive.
Before entering, Margaret looked back once.
Through the mansion's enormous glass windows, she could see Richard sitting alone in the distance.
For years, Margaret had feared this moment.
She had imagined divorce as a collapse.

A humiliating admission that she had misjudged the person sleeping beside her.

Margaret looked toward the bright Miami coastline.

Margaret smiled.
